Locals call it Local’s Summer—a season of open beaches, cooler breezes, and festivals that make fall feel just as festive as July.

A Softer Rhythm

One of the surest signs of change is the traffic lights along Long Beach Boulevard.

• On the northern end—Barnegat Light, Harvey Cedars, Surf City—the lights go to blinking and/or darken early in the fall, a sign that these towns are settling into their tranquil off-season rhythm.

• On the southern end—Beach Haven, Holgate, and much of Long Beach Township—the lights usually stay on a little longer, often through Chowderfest weekend in early October, before switching off.

This staggered change perfectly reflects the island’s character: peaceful at the top, playful down south, each shifting at its own pace.

Dogs Return to the Beaches

Starting October 1, dogs are once again welcome on LBI’s beaches. From quiet sunrise strolls in Holgate to jetty walks in Barnegat Light, it’s a season when your four-legged friends can enjoy the sand and surf as much as you do.
